Alphabet Test with shortcut tricks

In almost all competitive exams, questions are set from Alphabet Test.  Mainly, four types of questions are asked based on alphabet test. These are:

  1. Alphabetical order of words
  2. Letter-word problem
  3. Alphabetical Quibble
  4. Word formation using letters from a given word

 

We will focus on all of these but before going into the deep, we need to grasp a few fundamentals tips and tricks regarding alphabets.

  1. There are 26 alphabets in English Alphabet.
  2. If we are asked to reach alphabets from the left, first letter we face is A and from the right that we face is Z.
  3. Direction of the alphabet series and position of each alphabet from both the directions are important grasp.
  4. It is difficult to remember position of all alphabets. But EJOTY & BGLQV are much easier to remember. There is an interval of 5 between every two letters. With respect to the position of these letters we can calculate the position of other letters very easily.

Questions based on alphabetical order of words

1. Which word will come first in the dictionary form the following words?
Minority, Minnow, Ministry, Minus

Solution: The series of words will be as follows:
Ministry, Minnow, Minority, Minus

2. Answer  the given questions based the following English Alphabet Series
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

i. Which is the 8th letter from your left?
   a)E     b) H    c)  I    d) S

Solution:  b) H;
According to the EJOTY formula position of E is 5. Therefore 8th letter from the left is 3 positions ahead of E and it is H.

5+3=>8, E+3=>8

E+1=>F
E+2=>G
E+3=>H

 

ii. Which of the following is the 18th letter from the right?
    a) H   b) G    c) I   d) R

Solution:   d) R;
18 is nearest number 20. According to the BGLQV formula, 20 is the position of G. To reach 18 from the right we need to move 2 positions right from the position of G. And 18 is the position of I.

20-2=18, G-2=18

T-1=H
T-2=I

Note: To move from Left to Right, EJOTY is convenient and to move from Right to Left BGLQV is convenient.

BGLQV is little bit confusing. There is an alternative and convenient method to the questions where it is asked to find the serial number of any alphabet from the right. It is as follows:

Step 1: Subtract the position of the alphabet from 27.
Step 2: Count the new number using the EJOTY.

Example:  The above question can be solved as
27-Positon of the alphabet from the left
i.e   27-18=9
According to EJOTY formula, 9 is the position of alphabet I.

 

iii. Which letter is the 5th to the right of the 18th letter from your right?
     a) C    b) D   c) M   d) N

Solution: d) N
 18th letter from right is 27-18=9=>I (According to EJOTY 9 is the position of I)
9+5=>I+5
I+5=>N
